Aloha. Welcome to the livestock Wala'au, a podcast aims to provide educational support information, guidance and outreach to our livestock stakeholders in Hawaii. We are your hosts, Mele Oshiro and Shannon sand. And today, we're going to just be talking about some updates that are going on this month in our little mini episode of our livestock Wala'au. And as always, we still have our feedback fest.
Shannon Sand:
That's right, our feedback fest is still going on it ends the this the end of this month, so that we can get that in and kind of get that analyzed and figure out what all you know, you all want to hear in the future. So it's very important because it helps us know if we're on the right track and things like that. And yeah, just give your feedback. Have your voice heard. Thank you very much in advance.

Yeah. Yeah, and so some updates for CTAHR, and workshops that are coming up. Thanks to everyone who came out to the forest and workshops that were held on kawaii Island and Big Island so far. We are going to have them again in mid September on Maui and October for a while who came in so
Shannon Sand:
and we are going to do an online option as well. So
Melelani Oshiro:
yeah, so far seven is the farm and ranch dress Assistance Network. We are conducting some work workshops across the islands to kind of address some of these stressors and provide tools for our producers to help with those types of things. want to give like a little like, talk over preview of like, what you're covering what I'm covering and stuff so people can kind of have an idea if it's relevant for them.
Melelani Oshiro:
Yeah, I mean, this workshop is unique in the sense that it brings together a few of our extension agents that have expertise and knowledge in very different areas. So myself with livestock. Shannon is our ag finance agent who have also a crop specialist that's there are a Copic such an agent and then another that works with intergenerational programs. So I think it's going to be a little bit of a mixing pot of different things but all very well relevant to production and your operations if you're dealing with agriculture, I mean it's a little bit of everything that will be in there and
Shannon Sand:
yeah, yeah, so yeah, mele covers different production and range land type of topics. For livestock, I talk about cash flow on John talks about varieties, I can't even say words today, variety trials, and just different like topics related to farm and ag production. And then we also have someone discussing you know, like safety like on farm safety topics or on ranch safety topics. So as well as like succession planning and like what to do if there's an emergency or an accident things like that somebody's important stuff things that we don't think about till sometimes we're in the moment of it's
Melelani Oshiro:
it's a unique workshop in a sense that we don't always have everybody from different aspects in their in one workshop. So you know, we'll also be sharing some other resources for Mental Health Awareness and Wellness for our farmers and other programs that you can get access to for just helping your overall operation. So So you h COVID updates. Yeah, so recently they put a mass are required once again on their indoor spaces. So on any UHF campus, you know, that's in classrooms, shared laboratories or any kind of confined educational spaces. So like when we have our workshops, if we're inside we're required to ask you to put on the mask and also in some other you know, settings on campus depending on what campus you're on. So just be aware. If you go to U H campus, you may have to put on a mask if you go indoors, right now that's the current updates that they have.
Shannon Sand:
So caveat to that is that the research and extension centers are considered part of campus even though we're not like on like a wahoo like Milan I am particular on Big Island, right. And so technically coming in to like our office spaces is considered that right so I was like we have closed door are so we're able to lock other people out right now while we record. But, you know, we've all got the surveillance.
Melelani Oshiro:
Yeah. Yeah. So that yeah, so that's a good point, Johnny, because our not all our extension offices are on campus. But if you're visiting a u h office, whether it's on or off campus, and it's indoor, we are required to do that. Yeah. And upcoming this month, we have our special guest speaker, Shannon sand. She's going to be talking with us. And she'll give a little spiel about share with us a little bit about what she's going to be talking about this coming month.
Shannon Sand:
Yeah, so we're going to talk a little bit about tax preparedness. I know, I know, don't turn don't turn it off, don't I see you pause that. But what I am going to say, while it is not very exciting, it is really important, and we are headed into fall. And as like ag taxes are due at least a month before regular personal taxes. So it's really important that we start preparing and understanding not even understand but start preparing for our taxes now. So that we have everything ready to go and can either give it to our accountant or bookkeeper or if we inputted it ourselves into like TurboTax, or whatever sort of tax keeping software or tax software you use. So you have everything together now. So we're just kind of going to talk a little bit about tax preparedness. So it should be very exciting. Very, very, very thrilling. And
Melelani Oshiro:
I know it's not always a fun thing to talk about, but something that you all have to relate or so I'm very awkward. And so yeah, so look forward to that coming up next month and a few other updates from our FSA office.
Shannon Sand:
Yes. So 2022 reimbursement, transportation cost program, signup is still open to all farmers and ranchers in Hawaii and the Pacific basin. The deadline is September 2. So hit it as soon as you can.
Melelani Oshiro:
Yeah. So this is going to literally come out. Yeah, like literally the day it's due basically, we're pretty close. So yeah. And then the 2023 noninsured, crop Disaster Assistance Program signup, deadlines are also going to be coming up September 30. For Flora culture. So we'll cut flowers and aquaculture as well as Christmas trees. And then December 31, for fruits, vegetables, grass, and honey.
Shannon Sand:
Yeah. And it is, if you get the opportunity to sign up for these, I would definitely do it because she was telling us the numbers for people that have gotten paid over the past years. And, you know, make sure you're signing up for it to get you know, if you qualify for it so that you're getting paid and getting the assistance. You know,
Melelani Oshiro:
yeah, some folks just don't sign up. And you know, yeah, I know,
Shannon Sand:
again, paperwork, we all hate it. Let's be honest, right? The admin stuff is the least fun about a lot of times what we do, unless you're me, and then you'd like spreadsheets, so it's fine. But even then, you know, sometimes fill in that paperwork out. It's not fun. But at the end of the day, it really helps us to keep the lights on and keep things moving. So make sure you're getting in there and filling that paperwork out. And honestly, this money is available to everyone. So make sure you get yours, you know what I mean?
Melelani Oshiro:
Yeah, and the last update is 2022 livestock forage program, or the LFP. Signup is open for all Hawaii counties. And the deadline is January 30 2023. So yeah, if you're not familiar, we'll put the links for FSA and all these programs in our show notes. But they're, you know, they're available. It's funding that's will be out there to help you in your operations. So, you know, take advantage of those programs.
Shannon Sand:
Yeah, absolutely.
Melelani Oshiro:
And we have another one last update, I think is from Hawaii academicians has a scholarship program that comes down from NCBA. It's called WD far scholarship program. And they're looking for applicants that recognize this scholarship recognizes graduate students committed to the beef industry. So if you're working in the beef industry, you're a graduate student, and you're looking for a scholarship. We'll put the information in there. But the due date for this is September 30 2022. So you know, go ahead and take a look at it and the opportunity, you know, or share it with someone else that you know if they're going into agriculture, or beef production, livestock and whatnot. So we will put the link also for that in our show notes.
Shannon Sand:
Apply, or let someone else know if you think they if they qualify for it to apply, you know? Yeah, so we always need more. All right, and then, of course, National Livestock days in September.
Melelani Oshiro:
That's right. And of course, we include some other days because you know, there's another important day in September Labor Day, right. So if you're on the white man side two I must say Labor Day races are gonna go on at Parker Ranch arena for the rodeo.
Shannon Sand:
I was thinking as I got invited to like go make to go make food in LA so looking forward to

Yeah, we're also going to do that but but yeah so you know labor days are third obviously the holidays observed that Monday so that will be holiday our offices extension offices will be closed closed. So just be aware. Yes. And

So and September 7, National Monte Cristo de surely you were mentioning now, am an Cheez
Shannon Sand:
Its like a ham and cheese sandwich that's like dozen eggs and like fried if I recall correctly, and I just like that sounds good. Yeah. Seems like a good thing to have. Yeah, though. And then September 20, is National stringy Cheese Day. So I just was like, well, let's cheese account. So when I was putting these together, I was like cheese.
Melelani Oshiro:
And September 27. National corned beef hash day, fresh corned beef hash, you cannot beat so. Well, anyways, just some fun things to talk about, you know, our national days, livestock days of the month, as we always do.
Shannon Sand:
