Aloha. Today's episode is sponsored by the Livestock Extension Group out of the University of Hawaii, Manoa College of Tropical Ag and Human Resources, the Center for Ag Profitability out of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and the Western Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program.
Mele Oshiro:Aloha and welcome to the Livestock Wala'au, a podcast aimed to provide educational support, information and guidance and outreach to our livestock stakeholders in Hawaii and the rest of the US. We are your hosts, Mele Oshiro and Shannon Sand, and today, in this mini episode, we're just going to give you some updates about some programs and other resources that are coming available. So first off, in Hawaii, there is Small Remnant Nutrition and Management in Hawaii webinar videos that will be coming soon to our Livestock Extension Group YouTube channel. So go ahead and take a look for that. We'll make sure we share that on our platforms.
Mele Oshiro:Also, just wanted to remind everybody that the USDA Risk Management Agency has expanded the pasture range, land and forage insurance to help protect Hawaii livestock producers from forage loss due to below average precipitation. If that occurs in your area. The program is available for those in Hawaii County currently only right now, I want to say it's sort of in a pilot stage, but it's being offered currently in Hawaii County and please take time to go on the RMA site if you'd like to learn more about PRF insurance and how you can find an agent to help you talk about the policies and such so it is an insurance program.
Shannon Sand:We also have a podcast where we talk about PRF and there was a panel of producers on there talking about from the mainland and from kind of where I live, talking about how they've used it and how you know it's it's benefited them over time.
Mele Oshiro:Yeah, you need to be signed up in a policy by December 1st and it'll start implementing in January of 2025. But the key is you need to be signed up by December 1st if you want to use PRF insurance. So check out. We'll put the links in there for RMA and for PRF insurance and you can get on there to be able to find an agent that will help you get more information and get enrolled if that's what you want to do. The other thing with FSA programs the Livestock Forage Disaster Program, or LFP, deadline to apply for the 2024 is going to be january 30th 2025. So just giving you a heads up and thinking about things in the future, if you need that. So we'll put the links for that for hawaii county and whatnot and shannon, I don't know yours, deadlines are probably different but we'll link up the fsa pages for both Hawaii as well as in.
Shannon Sand:Nebraska and the West.
Mele Oshiro:Yeah, and then the other thing I wanted to just remind everybody Hawaii Cattlemen's Convention and Annual Meeting is November 22nd and 23rd this year. We are down, they are going to be down in Waikoloa, so you do have to register for the event, but it's a full day of education in the Cattlemen's College and then the banquet and live auction in the evening and then HCC's annual meeting on Saturday morning. So the Cattlemen's College is great. It really has good continuing education and industry updates and discussion. You know, and meet with some of the vendors as well as all of us from Extension with our livestock programs. All of us from extension with our livestock programs will be there and we can, you know, be sharing about some current projects and such that we will be having information for. So I'll put the link for hcc's website and their registration and all that info in the notes and that's all for hawaii okay.
Shannon Sand:So this is kind of nebraska and everywhere for the most part, with the exception of one for my updates. So our online quicken course is still going on. It will continue into infinity, but I think it's so important I'm gonna keep talking about it. It's 20 per person. You get access to the course for I want to say 90, 60 to 90 days. I'd have to double check, but it's listed in our show notes so you can check it out.
Shannon Sand:I'm currently working on heifer replacement cost forecasting for the state of Nebraska specifically. There's going to be a webinar that you can catch on the replay. So if you kind of want an idea of what you can afford to spend on a replacement heifer if you're living in the state of Nebraska specifically, check it out. The 2024 custom rates survey is out for Nebraska, so if you're wondering how much things cost on average in certain areas, now's a good time to check it out. November 4th through 8th this one is open.
Shannon Sand:I would say, like nationwide is AgSmart Money Week. It's a mostly online webinar series offering. So it's covering everything from land leasing, budgeting, family living expenses, debt, cost of production and more. So we'll have that website linked below as well. It should be available and you can register online and all of those offerings are free. So sign up for what you want and even if you're in a different time zone, you could go to those, because you will get the links afterwards so you can watch the replay, and everybody who's on those are experts in their industries and areas, so it should be really good.
Shannon Sand:I'm really excited I got I got some really good people coming in, so there will be three in-person workshops covering family living expenses, focusing on budget savings and investment as well as debt, but those will also be again online. So if you're not in those locations because we currently have, I think, six locations throughout the state of Nebraska that will be simulcasting it. So and unfortunately, it's 7am your time when it would be happening, so, which is 12 mine right now, although you know time changes always confuse me, to be fair. Yeah, so it's very exciting, but if you want to watch it again, it will also be offered online so you can catch a replay later. So just sign up for it so you can get the link later if you want. And then our upcoming guest, this month.
Mele Oshiro:Yeah, it's gonna be Dr Travis Idol who will be sharing some updates about the Seedless Lucina Hybrids for a Sustainable Civil Pasture in Hawaii project that we are all involved in, so we'll be getting some updates from him about the project, where we're at and sort of where our next steps are and how you can get involved if you want to find out more information about it.
Shannon Sand:Yeah, I'm very excited. So, yeah, yeah, all right, so make sure to follow us on our social media pages, the Livestock Valhalla and the Livestock Extension Group, if you haven't already. Be sure to visit the UHCTAR Extension website and our YouTube channel listed in the show notes.
Mele Oshiro:Yeah, for more additional information about this or any other topics or comments, send us an email at valao at hawaiiedu.
Shannon Sand:Thanks again for listening to Livestock Valao and before we go show some love to your favorite podcast by leaving us a review anywhere you listen to this, and then stay tuned for next month's episode.
Mele Oshiro:Yeah, thanks again to our sponsors the Livestock Extension Group of the University of Hawaii, manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, the Center for Ag Profitability of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Western Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program. Mahalo for listening. A hui hou, a hui hou. Thank you.
