Aloha. Today's episode is sponsored by the Livestock Extension Group out of the University of Hawaii Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, the Center for Ag Profitability out of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Western Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program, aloha and welcome to the Livestock Walau, a podcast aimed to provide educational support, information, guidance and outreach to livestock stakeholders in Hawaii and the rest of the US.
Mele Oshiro:We are your hosts, Me Oshiro and Shannon Sand, and today we're just going to talk a little bit about what's going on this month in this mini episode. I will start with Hawaii and just updates on things that are available and resources that we have out there now. Our small ruminant nutrition and management in Hawaii. Webinar videos are available on our Livestock Extension Group YouTube channel channel and also wanted to share that USDA Risk Management Agency has expanded the PRF for pasture rains and forage insurance to Hawaii producers on the Big Island. So you do need to be signed up for this program by December 1st, I believe, in order to have coverage for starting January of 2025. So, if you're interested, check out the RMA site. We will link that information and, again, it's currently available in Hawaii for producers on the Big Island, hopefully to expand to the other islands.
Mele Oshiro:And the other thing, January 30th 2025 is the deadline to apply for the 2024 Livestock Forest Disaster Program. Assistant. So check out those deadlines are coming up, you know. So make sure you got those things in order. And then this month, November 22nd, 23rd Hawaii Cattlemen's Council Convention and Annual Meeting is going to be held in Waikoloa on the Big Island. If you have not already registered or gotten more details on that, we'll link that in the show notes for you as well. Should be exciting. That's all I got for Haleigh, right now Okay.
Shannon Sand:So updates for Nebraska and the rest of the West. Our online quicken course is available for all those. The cost is $20 per person. We are launching at the beginning of November the FSA borrower training. It's only approved for the state of Nebraska, but if you need to get your FSA borrower training done, it's $300 per person and you will have access to that, for I believe it's two years to get it completed, or until your time with FSA you have to meet whatever that time requirement is. So that's really cool. We'll have all that linked in the show notes on that cap. unl. edu website.
Shannon Sand:Heifer replacement forecast webinar has come out. The Heifer replacement forecast webinar has come out. So if you want an idea of what you can afford to spend for a replacement Heifer, check it out. The 2024 custom Rights Survey is out for Nebraska. November 4th through the 8th is Ag Smart Money Week. It's going to cover a variety of topics including land leasing, budgeting, family living expenses, debt, cost of production and more. It's also going to have three in-person workshops on Monday, wednesday and Friday in five different locations. Again, all that's going to be linked in that Ag Smart Money Week link listed below and it will cover everything from budgeting, savings, investment and debt. So if you can't make the in-person ones, be sure to sign up for online and you can catch the playback.
Shannon Sand:We are doing livestock risk insurance meetings tentatively in Curtis, nebraska, on November 13th from 7 to 9 pm. North Platte on November 12th from 630 to 830 Central Time. Shadron, nebraska, december 3rd, 630 to 830 Mountain Time, and December 4th in Scotts Bluff, 630 to 830 Mountain Time. And then we're doing a series of land leasing workshops on November 18th in North Platte from 1 to 4 and Kearney from 9 to 12. And those are both Central Time. Sorry, I have to keep double checking my notes y'all, because we have two times ends in the state. Then we also have. So You've Inherited a Farm. Now what? November 12th at Mid-Plains Community College in Imperial from 10 to 1.30. That's all for me.
Mele Oshiro:That was a lot. That's great, Are most of your meetings. These are all in person, correct?
Shannon Sand:Yeah, all the ones with specific locations are in person, but the Ag, smart Money week and the family living ones, there are in-person locations, but everything is also online. So if you're wanting to get your like family and like crop and business budgeting stuff kind of figured out or at least learn some more about it, it's, it's a good series to check out and you just sign up for the ones that you're interested in. You don't sign up for the whole thing. Yeah, oh yeah, awesome.
Mele Oshiro:And then, upcoming guest this month is kevin pasenda. He'll be talking to us about the grass atlas of hawaii, which is a tool that he has created online and that can help identify grass and give you more information. Though very cool. We'll be talking about some other tools as well that are available for grass identification and all that such stuff, so join us or listen in Tune in later on this month for that episode.
Shannon Sand:Make sure to follow us on our social media pages. The Livestock, Wala'au and Livestock Extension Group, if you haven't already. Be sure to visit the UHC to our extension website and our YouTube channel listed in the show notes.
