Welcome, Sponsors, And A Quick Apology
SPEAKER_01Aloha. Today's episode is sponsored by the Livestock Extension Group out of the University of Hawaii, Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience, as well as the Center for Ag Profitability out of the University of Nebraska.
SPEAKER_00Aloha, welcome to the Livestock Bala Ow, a podcast aimed to provide educational support, information, guidance, and outreach to our livestock stakeholders in Hawaii and the rest of the U.S. We are your hosts, Meli Oshiro and Shannon Sand. So today we're just gonna give a quick update in this mini episode of the Livestock Bala Ow and talk about what's going on this month. But before we do that, we just wanted to send a quick apology for some of the delays in getting our episodes posted. As it's been a busy few months for Shannon and I with workshops and field days and other programs across the islands and counties. And just kind of let you all know we'll be taking a short break from recording for the next couple of months, um, get us through summer. And then we'll be back with season six coming August of 2026. So yeah, just taking a quick hiatus for a couple months so we can catch up on things and get some things
New World Screwworm Webinar And Safety
SPEAKER_00done. So we'll start with some of the Hawaii program updates. Uh, there is a new webinar posted on our livestock extension group uh YouTube channel about New World Screwworm with the recent updates and things coming out down in Texas and whatnot. Uh, we did do one earlier on about talking about preparedness for our Hawaii livestock community. So that webinar is posted online and there's some other resources on there which are great to view uh and keep in mind. And I think one of the one of the key points that we want to remind everyone that the New World School Room does not just impact livestock, it's warm-blooded animals. So keep that in mind for any of those that do have you know other animals on your operation or your properties and things like that. It can can affect all of those guys, so and humans and humans and humans.
SPEAKER_01I was like, if you have open cuts and stuff and there's a potential for outbreak, keep them covered.
SPEAKER_00Yep, yep, that's right.
Oahu Sheep And Goat Farm Field Day
SPEAKER_00And second thing I want to share is the Hawaii Sheep and Goat Association in collaboration with Citar and the Livestock Extension Group and our Oahu Livestock Extension agent, Yunu and Bostamante. They are hosting a sort of open gate for Oahu Sheep and Goat series, and it's a producer-led farm field day and designed to foster farm-based learning and community connections with our uh sheep and goat producers um across the different counties. So, right now they're starting this in Oahu. You can, it's gonna be July 18th, and the first event is over at Kakuo EV Farms and Oahu. So you can go ahead and check out the link. There is a registration is required for it. Um, and it's I I believe there's space limited just because of the the area that you're gonna do and sort of the activities and whatnot. So if you want to attend that and you're interested, check out the link there. You can also contact our Oahu Livestock Extension agent, Yunuen Basamanti, for more information. We'll have all that information in the show notes for you.
Swine Health Workshops And Biosecurity Plans
SPEAKER_00And lastly, I want to share that we have uh received funding. I think we talked about it on the on the previous episode from the swine extension outreach program and the national pork board uh doing some swine health and education outreach programs. So we will be starting those in August and it'll go from all the different islands. We're gonna have some workshops, uh, pork quality assurance training, some um talking about biosecurity awareness, and we did some webinars, so we'll include those links in the show notes as well. And the webinars are sort of a preview of what the workshops will be, so you can go ahead and check that out. We will be, it's I just gonna start around August 10th and run through the 18th, and then we're gonna be on certain islands on certain days. So we'll start in Kauai and Oahu, Hawaii Island, Maui, and then Molu Kai. You're gonna be busy. A little bit, a little bit, yeah. So, but do look for that information. We'll put more details in the show notes for you about that as well. And if you want to find out more information, you can also just send me an email and all that in and connection and all the information for that will be in our show notes. So that's all I have for hoi.
Nebraska Financial Help And Key Dates
SPEAKER_01All right, I'll talk about Nebraska and the rest of the West. So we actually with the University of Nebraska have uh been very fortunate to receive some grant funding and have a financial analyst that that has come on board and will do one-on-one works with uh farm and ranch families in Nebraska. So if you have questions about that, you can go to our website, cap.unl.edu, and schedule an appointment. If you're just wanting a checkup or just to talk and see what your situation is. We've had almost a million acres and land burned this year. And with input prices and everything else going up, uh, you know, it might be a good time to have that one-on-one discussion. And I will say Dave is amazing. He actually worked at Farm Credit for 40 years doing just that. So he's actually worked with borrowers in the past that have, again, you know, been worried about their situation. So he did a lot of work with that. He's really amazing. Uh, July 9th, Nebraska Farm Business uh has their 2025 financial averages and outlook going up. And then from July 28th through the 30th is the North American Manure Expo. And that information is all gonna be contained in our show notes. So, and then Melee, do you want to talk about our upcoming guest in
August Return With Bull Value Tools
SPEAKER_01August?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so when we return in August um with our next next episode, we will have the talking start with Matt Stockton, who is uh extension specialist at uh University of Nebraska. And we'll be talking about some decision support tools that he has, looking at bull value calculator.
SPEAKER_01Calculator. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So we will have that information there, but that'll post out in August. So look forward. It was a great conversation. Um, enjoyed talking with him and um the tools that they have to share is I think could be very beneficial for our producers and anyone that's just kind of getting started, and even those that have been in um operation for a while.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, agreed.
